Guru Sridevi K Vishwanathan started learning Bharathanatyam from Mrs. Janaki Bhashyam at the tender age of 5 and fell in love with the art instantly. She has been performing since the age of 8 following her Salangai Pooja and has given several programs at some of the most prestigious sabhas in Chennai, India including the Music Academy, Mylapore R.R, Sabha , Triplicane Parthasarathy sabha , Airforce Academy, Nanganalloor Arts academy, university centenary Auditorium for the Russian ballet troop and many more. Being a versatile dancer, she has won several prizes at school and inter-college competitions.

 

Realizing her passion for Bharathanatyam at a very young age, she took advanced training in Bharathanatyam and nattuvangam from  “Padmashri Adyar K Lakshman” at his school “Bharata Choodamani”. ‘Lakshman Sir’ is one of the senior most disciples of “Guru Rukmini Devi Arundale” from Kalakshetra and one of the foremost nattavanars today.

Sridevi also understood the correlation between proper breathing techniques and being able to dance intensively and so took teachers course in Yoga from Shivananda Yoga Center. All the students at Natya Tapasya get training in Yoga for dance as a part regular curriculum. This enhances the stamina of the dancer and hence the dance is able to perform better.

Natya Tapasya Dance Academy, was inaugurated in the year 1983 in Dubai, and there has been no looking back since. Sridevi gave several solo performances and conducted numerous arangetrams in Dubai. Her students performed at most of the important associations and government functions such as Indian Arts Society, Kairali kala kendram, Indian Fine arts , Telugu Association, Gujarathi Association , DALA, Tamil ladies association, Abu Dabi Social Center, Dubai Shopping festival and Kerala Asianet T.V  to name a few.

Sridevi migrated to Canada in 2002 and has her dance school established in Canada. Her students have performed at Madras Arts and Cultural Association , Telugu Association, Kerala Malayali Association, North Your Police Racial discrimination day, Carassauga, Mosaic, Bharathi kala Manram and Yellow Rainbow to name a few.
